There is freedom in Christ! Jesus died to pay the cost of all our sins. The cost was death. The Man with no sins died for men who were filled with evil hearts and a sinful nature. Jesus said in John 8:31-32, “If you abide in MY word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

However, let’s take a moment to examine the statement “freedom in Christ.” I have seen many “Christians” involved in acts that they know they should not be involved in as a child of God, and a representation of Christ. Yet, they go around living their lives miserably, trapped living in the sins they know are wrong, but yet they proclaim the word of God to believers, as well as non-believers. Some believers are able to look past the iniquities of believers who are trapped in their sins; however, non-believers look upon believers who are bound by sin as hypocrites (which they are) and that there is no need for salvation if those who supposedly follow Christ do not follow His word full heartedly.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this MUST be said. My brothers and sisters in Christ, the freedom in Christ is not a freedom to sin. God will never approve of sin, no matter what the sin maybe. The biggest confusion always happens when we play with words, especially with the words of God, which is a sin in itself. Let me clarify this for ALL. Jesus freed us from our sins; He did not give us freedom to sin. If we cannot comprehend this, then we are not truly saved and do not have the privilege to call ourselves a Christian.

Let’s analyze “freedom to sin.” If Christ granted us the freedom to sin, then He would have gone against the will of God, which is a sin. God does not approve sin and if Jesus is Lord, then He does not approve sin either, and He could not have possibly given us the freedom to sin. If this was the case, there would have been no purpose to His death and no purpose for God. It does not make our sins better because we claim to know Go apart from the people who do not know God. In fact, although there is no sin greater than the other, I personally believe that if we as Christians participate in the sins of the world, it is worse for us because we are supposed to be a representation of Christ. It is very shameful when a heathen reminds a Christian that they are a Christian and should not be involved in certain things. Cursed are those who respond I have “freedom in Christ” so my sins are acceptable. So the message to the heathen is, it is not acceptable for you to sin because you do not know God, however, it is perfectly acceptable for me to sin because Christ gave me the freedom to sin. Now, if you give your live to Christ, then you can continue to sin and we can have sinful fellowship together. HYPOCRITES!

How dare we disrespect God this way! He sent His only begotten son to save us, rescue us, free us from our sins, and we have the audacity to say He is allowing us to sin. FOOLISHNESS!!! Imagine when hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, and people were trapped on roof tops, and rescue workers came to free them from the roof top; the equivalent would be the trapped people saying, “we’re free from our situation” and then jump back in the flooded waters and say, “you have provided us freedom to be trapped in the flooded waters. Thanks!” Seriously? We would look upon them in disbelief. That is the same way God looks at us in disbelief when we say we have freedom in Christ to sin.

Now, let’s examine “Jesus freed us from our sins.” We all know the story when the Pharisees bought forth the adulterous woman to Jesus in the early verse of John 8. When He told the accusers of the woman “He who is without sin, let Him cast the first stone,” and they departed. In verse 11, we always tend to remember when Jesus said to the woman, “Neither do I condemn you.” However, just as important, if not more important, He instructed her to “go and sin no more.” It seems many of us cut off the “no more” part and believe Jesus is telling her to go and sin. Well, Christians, it says “go and sin no more” meaning He has died to free us from our sins that we were trapped in.

Sin is not something that we have the power to stop through our own strengths. It is an addiction just like drugs, alcohol, sex, etc. However, God did not say it is something we must handle on our own. He knows the flesh is weak, but the spirit is more than willing. That is why He gave us the Holy Spirit to live within us so it can be our strength. Without the Holy Spirit, we are open to the devil’s attack and he is always willing to make an example out of us.

Christians, let us not pray that God gives us access to the fruits of this world so it can fuel our sins or fix situations within our sinful nature; but let us pray that He removes all of ours sins from us so we can be free of sin, and that we can be empty and allow God to fill us with the Holy Spirit. John 3:34 says, “For He whom God sent speaks the word of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.” When we allow God to fill us with His Holy Spirit, He will just continue to pour until it is overflowing. The power of the Spirit will push the sins out of our lives so it can fully consume us and overwhelm us full heartedly. Thank you Lord for freeing us FROM our sins and lead us not TO sin anymore as you commanded.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23
